Sports Guard

Close up of a hand holding a sports guard against a black background Perhaps you find yourself wearing protective gear like a helmet, but you do not care about wearing a mouthguard. Although not all sports require a mouthguard, if you find that you are taking part in physical activities that put your mouth at risk of being injured, it is better you put on a wear guard. Simply said, anyone, taking part in a sport involving body contact, flying equipment such as hockey sticks, or falls on the ground, should consider wearing athletic mouthguards. A mouthguard may be required if your child is engaging in activities like skateboarding, football, basketball, mountain biking, gymnastics, or other physical activities likely to contribute to a mouth injury. Our dental specialist at The Strongsville Center for Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry custom-fabricate sports mouthguards to promote your safety.

What Types of Mouthguards Are Available?

If you are seeking sports mouthguards, you will come across three types. The first one is the customized mouthguard which requires the measurements of your teeth through an impression to construct it. Our dentist gets a teeth impression that aids in making the oral appliances. The main benefit of custom-fit mouthguards is that they are designed specifically for you and not another person. They, therefore, provide an excellent fit and are comfortable and gentle to the gums and teeth while in the mouth.

You may also get the boil and bite mouthguards, which are pre-made, however, they do not fit as well as the customized ones. These mouthguards require that you boil them first to make them placid and then bite into them so that they fit the mouth. Although better than stock mouthguards, they do not work as effectively as customized ones.

Stock mouthguards, as the name implies, are sold in stores and pre-made. Often, they will not fit well and could feel too bulky when placed in the mouth. Therefore, they are the least comfortable and can make it hard for you to talk and breathe normally.

Based on how the different types function and fit in the mouth, our dentist recommends only wearing custom-fit mouthguards. This way, you ensure proper protection and a comfortable fit.

Cleaning Your Mouthguard

Because you wear sports mouthguards for long hours when playing sports, they accumulate bacteria, debris, and plaque. Cleaning them is essential so that you ensure they are free of this bacterial plaque that contributes to gum disease and decay. After taking them out, rinse the mouthguard immediately with warm water. Avoid hot water since it can make the mouthguard lose its shape. Additionally, brush the piece with a soft dental brush and dental antimicrobial soap. Toothpaste is not recommended for cleaning the pieces since it causes tiny scratches where bacteria can hide. After sports, check the condition of the appliances to see that they are in good form. If broken or damaged, consider replacing them. Our dentist can fabricate new mouthguards.

Do not risk injuring your teeth, lips, gums, or tongue just because you are missing a mouth protector during contact sports. Talk to us about your need for a mouthguard for sports and we will help construct one for you.
