Teeth Cleaning

Young lady smiling with a perfect smile Your mouth is a very important component of the body and requires proper oral hygiene and care. However, many people tend to take their oral health for granted. They assume that the brushing and flossing they do every day is enough to maintain proper oral hygiene. The truth remains that professional dental cleaning is needed as well. Come see our dental specialists at The Strongsville Center for Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry to ensure good health of the gums, teeth, jawbone, and other structures of the mouth, and the general health of the body.

Oral Exam Before Teeth Cleaning

When you come to our dentist for professional dental cleaning, you will first receive an oral exam. The dentist will examine the mouth, conduct X-rays, and perform an oral cancer screening. These steps help give our dental professionals a better understanding of the status of your oral health and the way to proceed with your dental cleaning procedure.

An exam also allows our team to detect issues that may be occurring such as gum disease, cavities, or decay. This helps determine if any additional procedures may be required. Examining the gumline and checking your bite alignment are essential aspects of an oral exam. Going without an exam during a dental cleaning appointment can leave your oral health in bad shape. Leaving cavities untreated can result in serious decay damage, which may, in turn, necessitate the need for treatments such as fillings and root canals.

The Teeth Cleaning Procedure

Several processes are involved in the actual teeth cleaning procedure. Our dental hygienist performs scaling to remove tartar around the gumline. Also, the specialist goes on to get rid of tartar between teeth using a dental scaler and a tiny mirror for guidance. Expect to hear some strange sounds because of the scraping, but you should not worry because it is entirely normal. If there is too much tartar building up within the mouth, it may take longer for the dentist to scrape it all off.

When done with tartar removal, the hygienist brushes the teeth using an electric toothbrush that removes any remaining tartar after scaling. The hygienist uses special toothpaste called prophylaxis paste, which has a grainy consistency to help scrub and polish the teeth. You will experience a gentle grinding movement within the teeth as well as the grinding noise of the brush. Nonetheless, the procedure is painless and pretty straightforward.

After deep cleaning and polishing, the hygienist performs professional flossing. This process helps remove residual plaque and paste. The dental hygienist can also pinpoint issues of concern that may need attention in the future. Once the flossing is done, you will rinse your mouth to wash away any tartar residue. The hygienist may spray water into the mouth or get you a rinsing solution consisting of liquid fluoride to help rinse your mouth.

A fluoride treatment may be done if need be. This treatment helps protect the teeth from cavities until you come back for the next dental checkup. During the fluoride treatment, we take a mouthpiece that we fit over your teeth. We then apply a foamy gel or sometimes a sticky paste on the teeth, leaving it for about a minute to act on the enamel.
